Vidurashwatha - "Jallianwala Bagh of South India"

Vidurashwatha is a small village in the district of Chikkaballapur in the south-east part of Karnataka. During the Gandhian phase of the national freedom movement a Dwaja-satyagraha (Flag hoisting programme defying the prohibitory orders of the government) was held as part of the Movement in Shivapura near Mandya in the erstwhile princely State of Mysore. Taking cue from the success of this violence-free event prominent leaders of Congress organization in Kolar district decided to hold Dwaja-satyagraha at Vidurashwatha. On 25 April 1938 during this mass participation provoked-violence broke out and in the police firing it is said that over 32 fell to the bullets and several agitators were injured. This tragic incident was broadcast by the BBC which drew the attention of national leaders of the Movement including Mahatma Gandhi.

Sardar Patel and Acharya Kriplani visited Vidurashwatha as Gandhi’s emissaries to report the facts and to work out a truce between the princely Mysore government and Congress organization.
